Biography

Born in 1980 at Utrecht, Raymon Matulessy alias Mondino grew up in Maarssen. A village between Utrecht and  Amsterdam in the Netherlands. There he was in contrast to his age group already busy with music at a relatively junger age, cause his father and uncle were playing in a band called "Zambesi". There the young Mondino and his little brother Chavez were travelling around with them to almost every practice of the band in local areas. "Without this band I probably could not have any idea of making music", says Mondino. "They let me grew up with music like Orleans, Spyro Gyra, Eagles, James Brown, Level 42, LTD you name it. You see, that's not the kind of music the other kids listened too at that time."  At the same time his cousins let him and his brother grew up with rock. His favourite rockband was "Europe" and his brothers "Bon Jovi" futhermore also groups like van Halen, etc. Then there was Mariah Carey. "The first time I saw her unplugged performance she got me!". After this period Mondino started to listen to a new kind of music called swingbeat. Boys to Men is still one of his favourites and actually Mondino's first bought CD was Cooleyhighharmony. It was swingbeat that brought him to the Hip Hop scene. "The number one hip hop poetrist and MC ever is Tupac Shakur! No one can do it better!". And from hip hop to drum 'n bass he started mixing on turntables at the age of 15. It all happened when his cousin DJ Fioro asked Mondino to visit him for some T-shirts he brought from Italy. The turntables were there and from the first touch on Mondino was sold and was mixin' almost every week from then at his cousins place called "Het Hok". With proud Mondino says: " The first two vinyls I practiced with were two vinyls of  'Funky Drummer' from James Brown. And those are hard to find these days gheghe...".At the age of 13 he started writing lyricz for hip hop, where he was already creating his own beatz by primitively sampling from tapedesk to tapedesk.

When he got his first computer he started to make real beatz and when he was satisfied about it, he quitted buying hip hop instrumentals. His first time performance was with the hip hop band 'Windkracht 13' at his high school when he was 15. In that period he only focussed on spinning hip hop and drum 'n bass. From drum 'n bass and hip hop he noticed a complete new style from England in 1999,called UK garage (later on divided into 2-Step). Smooth rnb tunes on an uptempo beat. The latest style Mondino is devoted too is Funky Club and Latin House. Mondino is besides spinning also currently active with producing music for other artists even do he still is a student at the Eindhoven Technical University. Currently groups and persons Mondino is active with are: Broeky Bastardz, TAK (Kareemineel, Atos and T-mong), The Otto Gang and the SMU-project. The drawnings and designs on this site are made by RH. Mondino is half dutch (The Netherlands) and half moluccan (Maluku). The name Matulessy is a moluccan name. My dutch grandfather (Hille) origionally came from Breukelen and my dutch grandmother (Bouman) grew up in Veenendaal en moved to Maarssen later on. My moluccan grandfather came from the moluccan island Saparua from the village Haria and my grandmother (Rumahmory) comes from the mother-island of Maluku, that is Ceram, from the village Wassamu. "I've never been in Maluku, I hope there comes a day I can!". In his work as a mc and producer Mondino tries to play in with the problems Maluku and the surrounded countries have with independency and corruption.

The Name

Mondino comes from Raymondino. When his parents were angry at him because he did something that wasn't allowed, they called him Raymondino or Raymondientje. Also a lot of people called him Ray instead of Raymon. "So I thought: Why don't I call myself Mondino?"

Mondino is also an italian word. It means:

"Little World"

"I also live my own life in my own little world! And quess what: My vinyls are round, the world too! My vinyls spin around, the world too!"

So besides a name it also brings a filosophy with it.
